I alone in trepidation Like a blind man lost the way, gave in to wild fear One with the land without a nation Carry all my tears in vain from my misguided years A hopeful hill, sunlight golden My heart it hides echoes olden The first of animals I spotted knew my native country And I forgot just why I came The lion and the she-wolf at my heels the other way Among my enemies add my own name Ghost I see or bodily There stands my master and my friend Help me bear the weight of all our worldly fate And to my pilgrimage your counsel lend In the middle of our lives We, between to live or die Lose our sight of the stars and planets afar And things high and true We the many and few must see what we are The way ahead will never open to us, strong or clever See her hunger is forever and greater than our worth There is another passage hidden from the mortal masses Down beneath the smoke and ashes and all the battered earth You know it best the place I speak He shows the land unpromised Did you not sing of he who founded the eternal city His footsteps filled the words of every page What mandate lifts my shoulders to the hallowed heroes older What right have I to meet their noble gaze? Your destiny was not born of me But she whose name preserves your soul She whose face holds a foremost place Inside your broken heart made whole In the middle of our lives I, resolved and with my guide Crawl through fire and earth, through madness and mirth The world upside down Reach salvation unbound celestial sound in whispers divine Through the dolorous land lead me by the hand Steadfast we shall go For lost no more, the way I know

The Gates 05:51
Through me is the way to the doleful house Through me the way into endless pain Through me the way among people lost Herein your justice made Before me were no things created But those who will endure evermore And though my words here are faded They'll always mark oblivion's door Abandon all hope, ye who enter here
4.
Abandon 05:57
At first the vile desires of your soul absorb ambition gone astray Descend, defile, forget your fear and loyalty and violate the day No I can't follow you I've got too much to lose In the shadows I must survive Then get your wretched flesh out of my sight Although I'm damned I stay inside the fight For all time Fire within not yet extinguished by the blow to pride You seek the light Arise, amend, become a true defender And uphold all that is right Now I see an evil stare I must escape their eyes Enemies they all have arrived Begone with you if you won't stand with us You live by fear if you abandon trust So choose a part you can hold your heart to And follow it through with all your might For the first defection of creation enslaves you all to this endless fight From hiding you observe the slaughter And the suffering on either side Indecisive fool you've turned your back on all of us And lived while we have died All above and below hold glory over me I have forgotten what it is to be alive Escape the swarming rage that blinds the dead There flies a banner for which I have bled So choose a part you can hold your heart to And follow it through with all your might For the first defection of creation enslaves you all to this endless fight
5.
The Boatman 11:19
Draw the coins from your eyes They look around for the first time Souls by a starless gray shoreline Make towards the water's edge There by the shore silent he stands Our passage paid, lain in his hand Lead us out of the sunlight And set sail for the night One by one into the quiet thunder We vanish into his possession Vast as all the void yet still a ghostly whisper Is the boatman's voice Come with me across the sea By my oar to sunset shores Like the blink of an eye against the days of our darkness Life come and gone, daylight and dawn fading farther still away Lost are the friends, family and lovers Lost is the blood borne for each other Silence of the void hear my ghostly whisper Memory please stay with me Still the screams that fill my dreams
6.
City of Iron 06:29
Not in our own might can we face the wardens ahead Those who would hinder and harm the footsteps of the dead Crossing the wasteland a soldier on wings of his wrath We take to flight barely time to rush out of the path Smash down the gates and eradicate any and all Piling the vanquished atop frozen shards of the wall Here beneath the battered earth there lies a city of iron Sealed according to their worth in fraud and malice's mire Confined in tombs of their own hand With flames across the land Before our eyes Forward into the fields unnatural torches reveal Country and kin now reduced to this wretched ordeal Know that in this place Your thoughts must have no room for fear Verily doubting must die as the morningstar nears Here beneath the battered earth there lies a city of iron Here is born a second birth onto an eternal pyre Align, draw nearer to the core The dragon and his whore Await your eyes

If it's a higher power that defends these shining sheep Our hunger must be only bound to those inside our reach Like feral hounds we set ourselves to tear each other through Held back from your throat by chains of what we cannot do The dog and dragon's face The spear and savage race Scarletmoor and ravaging, mighty tusks and withered wings All hearken to our captain's call and sing: We are the host of the fallen The great and terrible claws In here our blazing ascension Holds captive all your fear and awe Speared from the boiling tar to satisfy your earthly fears But neither man nor beast is what we've gathered for you here The chain colossal that confines our bodies in the mud Still stretches far enough that we can smell your boiling blood O masters, I will feed The pilgrim's wants and needs Behold the rogue dive eagerly Down beneath the screaming sea For brief escape from our brutality We are the host of the fallen The great and terrible claws In here our blazing ascension Holds captive all your fear and awe With nothing left to lose we focus our infernal art On that which our forsaker chose to hold close to his heart The chain has snapped, the fury broken free Let's see you escape from what you weren't supposed to see Now fly my son, make haste! It's time to leave this place Don't look behind you as you run From all-accursed fallen throng Or join forever their unending song We are the host of the fallen We show no mercy or shame But unrelenting the hours And our containment all the same
9.
Who walks in stride before my eyes? Above our heights extend their might Towards the sky Not towers, but ancient leviathan Don't leave me for I feel my fears again What chance have I to stand and survive Through such power deprived Where glory had been? Babel's witless psalmody Animal ferocity High thund'ring through the gloom sounds the horn of doom Alone I stand free from blame in heaven's strife Divine demand called my name and took my life If you Hold fast now Rebirth Descending My fame The last round On Earth The ending Brings the living and the dead their righteous salary Beyond the reaches of mankind Below these halls in frozen walls Darkest divine! The center of darkness illuminates The echoes my heart sadly hides and hates Forgotten place beyond time and space Compassion erased forever within Tell me father as a friend Tell me all things have an end Through knowledge it's untrue Nothing I can do As legend knows that I fell to mortal man So I was chosen to serve mortal commands And now No greater You go A distance To meet From passive The foe Persistence Blackness overhead conceals the giants' gallery
10.
Made in the light of the morning sun Brightest arrayed of the winged ones But from your taste of power that you faced You shed your noble birth Cast from the sky by a vengeful hand Crashed through the world, deep inside you stand Encased within, all evil's origin The master of the earth In the heart of hell From the stars you fell Thought and time seem to freeze Death is all you know But could you still go Before your God on your knees? Ages gone by, your undying rage Gnashing your teeth, writhing in your cage Your jealousy of human destiny Moved you to reach too far Do you deserve an eternal end? What would he do if you made amends? Was it your hate or pre-decided fate That made you who you are? In the heart of hell From the stars you fell Thought and time seem to freeze Death is all you know But could you still go Before your God on your knees?

Rise! Behold the starlit sky Climb we as the eagle flies Gaze upward at the endless mountain As the earth behind us dies Leave what shadows must conceal Receive what sunlight now reveals Breathe life regained avert your thoughts from All below damnation's seal Don't forget what you have seen Around you in these darkened hours Now your eyes which shared in pain my son Greet the sky and once more see the stars

about

A project in production over a period of roughly 12 years, Inferno is my rock rendition of the first book of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy. This is a concept album, inspired mostly by a blend of progressive rock and romantic-era orchestral music, that draws on what I considered the most notable sections of the source text.
